Forced to flee to France following the failure of the Irish Rebellion of 1798, he quickly came to the notice of Napoleon and gained a captaincy in the newly forming Irish Legion. He was a brave and capable officer and was appointed to command the regiment in 1813. After serving with credit at the Battle of Bautzen, poor Lawless lost a leg during the action at Lowenberg. The whole regiment was effectively destroyed just a few days later after it was trapped and cut to pieces by artillery fire. Lawless survived the wars but he died in Paris in 1824 at the comparatively young age of 52.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifHoMVTCzBnfHgOTcy3I5_T5tq_X-Pxo9XJvKrUqO1IW707pLkIQWuJZU5RrPPdVDkRONpdxD2lUpGWqniy30zFozmvDLQsC5ZqvdVpYBQ1zJlAuEhfnggdtZ7XPjV3T0exYB4SLtJtl6Hl35USKAQN9HC-AGbiieU5y4QXmZZItR9KoSbbsLsbB8Q3to7/s849/P1.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="849" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifHoMVTCzBnfHgOTcy3I5_T5tq_X-Pxo9XJvKrUqO1IW707pLkIQWuJZU5RrPPdVDkRONpdxD2lUpGWqniy30zFozmvDLQsC5ZqvdVpYBQ1zJlAuEhfnggdtZ7XPjV3T0exYB4SLtJtl6Hl35USKAQN9HC-AGbiieU5y4QXmZZItR9KoSbbsLsbB8Q3to7/w400-h301/P1.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">How it started.</td></tr></tbody></table><div><br /></div><div>My Lawless started out as a recast <i>Hinton Hunt</i> WN 15: Grand Duchy of Warsaw Fusilier Officer marching. I wanted to have a go at converting him because I really fancied a mounted colonel with a bicorne.</div><div><br /></div><div>He needed a fair amount of leg surgery and whatnot to make him sit nicely on a horse, but he managed it in the end. I find these sorts of conversions a lot easier these days as I finally invested in a decent, variable-power soldering iron. I run this at about 30W, which heats the figure metal up quite quickly, ensuring rapid results and a good bond for the solder. Lawless got a new left leg, an epaulette on his right shoulder and a good straight scabbard for his sword using this method.</div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjljz2xU-eB1_XXNNiKG-RNCaw18LZ-9rM4mwZJhqYJR9uFkEPupfq88htZNcq8YYqKT6Zy11j6tbAJZfuwBE0g3DKBDzT7K0O9gWL_xT24eUi-kb0w9aJy4DcHPTVoQhycKJ7wqStxEWnGtmwUuX7y042feRxfh6yiBmPB8I5l12jdMCx2FM0wKMmsTuII/s1035/WL1.JPG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="776" data-original-width="1035" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjljz2xU-eB1_XXNNiKG-RNCaw18LZ-9rM4mwZJhqYJR9uFkEPupfq88htZNcq8YYqKT6Zy11j6tbAJZfuwBE0g3DKBDzT7K0O9gWL_xT24eUi-kb0w9aJy4DcHPTVoQhycKJ7wqStxEWnGtmwUuX7y042feRxfh6yiBmPB8I5l12jdMCx2FM0wKMmsTuII/w400-h300/WL1.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">How it finished.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgISdxJFoOOKTs-HzR6m2TCpCp7JOZiaw_PQ65Y3SemxM7qNliTwUG1naphWom2oVrfLhkN88jUI-rHCxoYZhnk-tRBGWNA4o8R7ZN6GeXtInLUa7OjI8X658q7lXhNsOOGFbU3iSSTmSmFNFiBnZPBwwZYEmYM2sK7a4hg3M8xyQ4k4D8DzvFe0gTFAGIf/s1103/WL2.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="828" data-original-width="1103" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgISdxJFoOOKTs-HzR6m2TCpCp7JOZiaw_PQ65Y3SemxM7qNliTwUG1naphWom2oVrfLhkN88jUI-rHCxoYZhnk-tRBGWNA4o8R7ZN6GeXtInLUa7OjI8X658q7lXhNsOOGFbU3iSSTmSmFNFiBnZPBwwZYEmYM2sK7a4hg3M8xyQ4k4D8DzvFe0gTFAGIf/w400-h300/WL2.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5vrC8SZ9AbHTtxai1Leu3BZNvZ0RjTl5Qbm777b30nc2pWuq9XEXMaUbefjR0IBWHCeMGpdz3iCmsjQNNXnfqz3IYLkTNDVuYLgMFpsxLXNETX9bHnrp381iszWiEUSwVwWVT3hl8tid7fLryJHI9n5OrikdlVvdPx0ccwmTqNdQQ-9fBAnjGaY_tEOpD/s1158/WL3.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="868" data-original-width="1158" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5vrC8SZ9AbHTtxai1Leu3BZNvZ0RjTl5Qbm777b30nc2pWuq9XEXMaUbefjR0IBWHCeMGpdz3iCmsjQNNXnfqz3IYLkTNDVuYLgMFpsxLXNETX9bHnrp381iszWiEUSwVwWVT3hl8tid7fLryJHI9n5OrikdlVvdPx0ccwmTqNdQQ-9fBAnjGaY_tEOpD/w400-h300/WL3.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGIyqx5ht8Pg0hRIhc8gMh0GMTeff7zWloaX7rYcolLxDrwTbjAFIOYECQhpCK_ESQu7n29RTAlCgMvAl4DTCaZYC1uH_KN6lLPwMC2qjdGuau_BduWcyTUxrjM7Igso94dY_Je9YIUPXOmSyXT9u92U1xiM_EbH75PTKAtlmNdmnq60OhQHUpnG62_DDx/s956/WL4.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="717" data-original-width="956" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGIyqx5ht8Pg0hRIhc8gMh0GMTeff7zWloaX7rYcolLxDrwTbjAFIOYECQhpCK_ESQu7n29RTAlCgMvAl4DTCaZYC1uH_KN6lLPwMC2qjdGuau_BduWcyTUxrjM7Igso94dY_Je9YIUPXOmSyXT9u92U1xiM_EbH75PTKAtlmNdmnq60OhQHUpnG62_DDx/w400-h300/WL4.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><p>He towers a bit over his tiny wee DK soldiers, but I'm quite chuffed with him nonetheless.</p><p>Have a great weekend everyone</p><p>WM</p>Wellington Manhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08295966991101976478noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4242408484763644333.post-66622243130220108222023-11-12T16:40:00.001+13:002023-11-12T16:41:57.123+13:00Irish Update<p>The Irish Legion are going to be a fairly heavy-duty painting job, I fear, so to spur myself on I've completed most of the command group. The figures therein were 20mm <i>Napoleoniques set #19</i>: Young Guard Voltigeurs, engaging.<br /><br />I remember being very excited about getting my mits on them, but was less than pleased when they arrived. As you can see below, Duke Siefried's idea of the YGV was to convert a <a href="http://findthatfigure.blogspot.com/2008/07/fn-81-french-light-infantry-voltigeur.html"><i>Hinton Hunt FN 82</i>: French Light Infantry Voltigeur, charging</a> by sticking a YGV head onto it and then bending its legs in a really weird way.<div><br /></div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIil0qeT1V-_X6G4unnF8OsSVd8GkeFdbOt_g8DOsroxmPJyDQbYf2ZWr0ecMZ4fb01Rwk7hyQbLCbwlYOZH4IjV_yNWDPrxjxeN4PidCHHeO-j_o06bR-PSLYd2VQ27OS3TnvUcZyorc4OPuLMbmxuI-m_2GayRq-jvEM2RycswmQUwr0VoTpVQUeuc6w/s1538/DK19.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1154" data-original-width="1538" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIil0qeT1V-_X6G4unnF8OsSVd8GkeFdbOt_g8DOsroxmPJyDQbYf2ZWr0ecMZ4fb01Rwk7hyQbLCbwlYOZH4IjV_yNWDPrxjxeN4PidCHHeO-j_o06bR-PSLYd2VQ27OS3TnvUcZyorc4OPuLMbmxuI-m_2GayRq-jvEM2RycswmQUwr0VoTpVQUeuc6w/w400-h300/DK19.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I'd more or less decided they were a write off, but when I got them out to have another look at them I discovered that they're really rather maleable and all they needed was a firm thumb press to get them to stand up properly.</div><div><br /></div><div>The obvious thing to do would've been to paint them as regular French light infantry, but I decided to go for something a bit more exotic. About half of them needed sword repairs, and the three command conversions (the officer, standard bearer and trumpeter) were made from even harder-to-get recasts. The upshot was that there was little room for error, so I had to take my time.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAFgAXthYlid92fkpfG6cdSVLHJ4RXvVEHgisbWRlWpm6dyDiwn3PwKkYimOCPx4o8c6MlZ0nVq1kKT7rRRHmcLjqN1qCEr5jGjiuZfrIiN9ULY6uF1j7IWzIx8kEB4G248UQ_LRv3oBU1nSbvCZEPR2i03C24zJdAJqkweMH-0zOCEYw3buDX_pXrwQ/s1331/IMG-1839.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1331" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAFgAXthYlid92fkpfG6cdSVLHJ4RXvVEHgisbWRlWpm6dyDiwn3PwKkYimOCPx4o8c6MlZ0nVq1kKT7rRRHmcLjqN1qCEr5jGjiuZfrIiN9ULY6uF1j7IWzIx8kEB4G248UQ_LRv3oBU1nSbvCZEPR2i03C24zJdAJqkweMH-0zOCEYw3buDX_pXrwQ/w400-h276/IMG-1839.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>I'm not entirely decided about whch regiment they are to be, so the initial plan is to paint their facings white (which is what I'd do in any case). If I like them like that, then they will be the 2nd (1st West Prussian) Dragoons. If I don't, then I'll probably paint their facings over in pink and turn them into the 6th Neumark Dragoons instead.</p><p>How quickly these get done will depend on whether I go travelling again next month. I feel great and my GP says I'm good to go, but my employers may take a different view. I'm hoping to find out in the next week or two.</p><p>Wish me luck</p><p>WM</p>Wellington Manhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08295966991101976478noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4242408484763644333.post-2572835837743616752023-02-18T14:01:00.010+13:002023-03-11T08:34:32.490+13:00Army Analysis<p>My apologies for the long intermission, but I've been away on holiday in the Deep South. Getting restarted on the painting table, however, has been a bit hit and miss. This will change, I'm hoping, as a result of a delightful visit from my friend Bill W, who came all the way from Oklahoma.</p><p>Bill wanted to see all the troops, of course, so I set them all out for him:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjtuNPv_KHl7JRknnpME_e17xtaPmJ-arKP331I10WCQ2q5uSgS6ZwnFdu8msh59Hafnnv970u-KevCvBZ84UmJxnwnbQ2i_HX05fq1bIBdBx7AQARrVIXyZqu1sh-XbmiJHQ7xWsVZCJVgUn1v9cfquHMLkc01EQHG8HUKAy_f65A1EpBlJUoXZNasQ/s3066/IMG-1832.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1725" data-original-width="3066" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjtuNPv_KHl7JRknnpME_e17xtaPmJ-arKP331I10WCQ2q5uSgS6ZwnFdu8msh59Hafnnv970u-KevCvBZ84UmJxnwnbQ2i_HX05fq1bIBdBx7AQARrVIXyZqu1sh-XbmiJHQ7xWsVZCJVgUn1v9cfquHMLkc01EQHG8HUKAy_f65A1EpBlJUoXZNasQ/w400-h225/IMG-1832.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />And this is what they'd have looked like if Bill had shown up in 1973:<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq8VX6w8Tgxu6lL3XutUwyKid9GS9wjC-Tq_zlJqQ-J6xtBua3E13JDtFG-3hkfRG2VmMWnjT3XFBGhG3m4bgIv2PwMtF9JFMMtHu-2e6kUCFvMcDllxufD_hbGzEQV4unrzo924P3Bkb8uJtH5fOhe8sna4N2-8B1F_NQFimbXPXNTeAvQabw-tu3-g/s3314/IMG_1805%20(2).JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1170" data-original-width="3314" height="141" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq8VX6w8Tgxu6lL3XutUwyKid9GS9wjC-Tq_zlJqQ-J6xtBua3E13JDtFG-3hkfRG2VmMWnjT3XFBGhG3m4bgIv2PwMtF9JFMMtHu-2e6kUCFvMcDllxufD_hbGzEQV4unrzo924P3Bkb8uJtH5fOhe8sna4N2-8B1F_NQFimbXPXNTeAvQabw-tu3-g/w400-h141/IMG_1805%20(2).JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div><div>And since you've twisted my arm, here's a slightly better colour shot:</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTOZWANiJRSCPq3Rl_etN5fhuVNesjXMwmOnoPrASxSU-0mM2G5jZZObiW09lz0k8V6U6p97KEpPT1IEBT9YIqUYxgAqcyqrwVMkuMChATMgF0wb7x8kkRQGC8JH_M4GIA9z50WtL_dgK3rIwWxHjq_Ii4rurHmhZGEVgVRXUX9xNUm4717RoMo-6new/s3183/IMG_1824%20(2).JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1241" data-original-width="3183" height="156" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTOZWANiJRSCPq3Rl_etN5fhuVNesjXMwmOnoPrASxSU-0mM2G5jZZObiW09lz0k8V6U6p97KEpPT1IEBT9YIqUYxgAqcyqrwVMkuMChATMgF0wb7x8kkRQGC8JH_M4GIA9z50WtL_dgK3rIwWxHjq_Ii4rurHmhZGEVgVRXUX9xNUm4717RoMo-6new/w400-h156/IMG_1824%20(2).JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>This was very useful, as it happens, as it allowed me to see where I've got to and what the gaps are. He is none other than Lieutenant Colonel Sir John Colborne, who commanded the 52nd at Waterloo.</p><p>The figure chosen for this gig was an <i>Alberken BN 35: British light infantry officer</i>, pictured here next to a <i>Hinton Hunt FNH 10: French general officer's horse</i>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQzvA0mWsO27mWju0WKN4bC43oIy8OgemAIcvX1YPrKSgGEe-wlDLZjgxvw90EGAeJn6wkdHKGkgL82P2PAuqdfvNMbAsHgoWj8u-4V60a6pKz__w53ihcFFryRlIGSZjPKVLd79DRJrdnBFKkP1N79NIz2LsssJQ_x6KpFL2PtlSUza7jwL7HsqXdOQ/s2018/Alberken%20BN%2035.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1424" data-original-width="2018" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQzvA0mWsO27mWju0WKN4bC43oIy8OgemAIcvX1YPrKSgGEe-wlDLZjgxvw90EGAeJn6wkdHKGkgL82P2PAuqdfvNMbAsHgoWj8u-4V60a6pKz__w53ihcFFryRlIGSZjPKVLd79DRJrdnBFKkP1N79NIz2LsssJQ_x6KpFL2PtlSUza7jwL7HsqXdOQ/w400-h283/Alberken%20BN%2035.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Cutting him off his base, fixing his sword and bending his legs, etc., so that he could sit on the horse were all quite easy. Poor Nettles was killed by a French round shot shortly before the battalion launched it's celebrated assault against the Imperial Guard. His body, along with the King's Colour pinned beneath it, wasn't recovered until the following day.<br /><br />To command my version of the 52nd I have a very fine <i>Hinton Hunt BN 90: British Light Infantry Officer charging</i>; and two somewhat less than brilliant <i>Der Kriegspielers Napoleoniques</i> standard bearers from <i>Set 154: British Light Infantry Command Group.</i><br /><br />Both the standard bearers needed soldering as the flags were on the verge of breaking off, and I had to inscribe the King's Colour as Der Kriegspielers only produced Regimental Colours! The overall effect is...well...it is what it is, shall we say. They were fun to do though, which is the main thing.<br /><br />Only 20 more to go.....<br /><br />WMWellington Manhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08295966991101976478noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4242408484763644333.post-16767650147695402162022-10-23T16:49:00.001+13:002022-10-25T04:52:16.356+13:00A little light work<p>My new regiment is starting to take shape, although I've only finished one of them so far as a test figure.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxrPHcnLwjf59O6zcd9k1spxuW1ypSfJqdpSdn0Fgw1xEQnZI8xBrp9ASRzxMauXTYrRtGQpggtpT53kNUYSHlRfsoMNhA2jc0C5ZKuRvxnhl6XC33VBUnxqIS5BQzfJHdXwtBwpn68KggDl8JASSbmztobUde8T3i75nqOxQUjsQPbOgtM_SOv9u4fg/s711/IMG_0959%20(2).JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="711" data-original-width="677" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxrPHcnLwjf59O6zcd9k1spxuW1ypSfJqdpSdn0Fgw1xEQnZI8xBrp9ASRzxMauXTYrRtGQpggtpT53kNUYSHlRfsoMNhA2jc0C5ZKuRvxnhl6XC33VBUnxqIS5BQzfJHdXwtBwpn68KggDl8JASSbmztobUde8T3i75nqOxQUjsQPbOgtM_SOv9u4fg/w381-h400/IMG_0959%20(2).JPG" width="381" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_W6UeVvckBJ5lPlW4bAPun6p1zsBAEfSYVNFra0VOYTPbJxBSjEWc1qIGeQlR5kH_Re0KHP3rAt38PoDz8TtqDNtR_h_kOVqaUFBTgWU39OaXIXY-4UA37LtIe7fI485pDQQnq2hyyfCTOwLbEZa22HT9k_OKZf1z-2JqXheX0QnrJgUT-cMlY5XVBA/s816/IMG_0955%20(2).JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="816" data-original-width="729" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_W6UeVvckBJ5lPlW4bAPun6p1zsBAEfSYVNFra0VOYTPbJxBSjEWc1qIGeQlR5kH_Re0KHP3rAt38PoDz8TtqDNtR_h_kOVqaUFBTgWU39OaXIXY-4UA37LtIe7fI485pDQQnq2hyyfCTOwLbEZa22HT9k_OKZf1z-2JqXheX0QnrJgUT-cMlY5XVBA/w358-h400/IMG_0955%20(2).JPG" width="358" /></a></div><br /><br /><br />He's a <i>Hinton Hunt BN 93: British Light Infantryman charging</i>, as are most of his comrades. For those wondering what happened, the abridged version looks a bit like this:</p><p>I went overseas for work for several weeks, then had to self isolate because half of my travelling companions came down with covid; I then had to deal with the mountain of work which built up in my absence; and then. just over two months ago, I had an accident resulting in three hospital admissions. It may take me up to a year, they tell me, to really come right again, but I'm very glad to say that I'm already sufficiently recovered to return to work in just over a week. It's all been a lot less fraught that it might have been, however, thanks to the wonderful support of my friends, family and colleagues. I'm a very lucky man.</p><p>Although I continued to mess about with the <i>4e Chasseurs à Cheval </i>over much of that time, it's really only for the last two weeks that I've been able to concentrate on them. I hoped to finish them today, but alas it was not to be. Nevertheless, here's a wee peek at where I'm up to. They will definitely be ready for battle by the end of next week.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvnXHBiVJ5cT956EpoPbnNkkBqSuMfQ2Q35RW-rsieWV2YZktvqOadocHeLEDBgozqD68-MJpiY1mJS5M1jRbVi3iRIG4lTPmWhmYvgup712epli7uRiifjErU_0yHVmgEYj-aIR6m64R8yRfz5sculPu6qJEyELNBCJB9P9Ke_iXkeWvkle5k-w60TQ/s3523/IMG-0773%20(2).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2349" data-original-width="3523" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvnXHBiVJ5cT956EpoPbnNkkBqSuMfQ2Q35RW-rsieWV2YZktvqOadocHeLEDBgozqD68-MJpiY1mJS5M1jRbVi3iRIG4lTPmWhmYvgup712epli7uRiifjErU_0yHVmgEYj-aIR6m64R8yRfz5sculPu6qJEyELNBCJB9P9Ke_iXkeWvkle5k-w60TQ/w400-h266/IMG-0773%20(2).jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p>I'm very keen to get them finished as I have some very special infantry lined up to follow them which I'm desperate to have a crack at!</p><p>Yours, finally back in the saddle,</p><p>WM</p><p><br /></p>Wellington Manhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08295966991101976478noreply@blogger.com20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4242408484763644333.post-27736242777590128682022-02-06T20:57:00.007+13:002022-02-10T06:35:33.969+13:00Wrestle on the Weser<div><b>The Situation</b></div><div><br /></div>It is the spring of 1813, and following his <a href="https://thehintonspieler.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-battle-of-holzberg.html">defeat at the Holzberg</a>, Napoleon has withdrawn his army to recruit and reorganise behind the River Weser. South of the bridge another battalion and pair of artillery batteries are in reserve. Engineers (at "X") have begun preparing the explosive charges, which take a full 10 turns to make ready. Whether they actually explode in time will depend on dice throws. A small village is immediately to east of the river crossing on the northern bank.<br /><br />Blue, with two light and one heavy cavalry regiment, two batteries, six battalions of close order infantry and one battalion of light infantry are nearly all off map, with the exception being small parties of light cavalry scouting the approaches. How, where and when Blue forces will arrive (at either points A, B, or a combination of both) was unknown by either side, as the columns had become mixed during their march towards the objective. Things were so arranged, however, that Blue was guaranteed to have all his units on the table by the begining of turn six at the very latest.</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgk1TW2p6NgcdwP06k-pe4AYRZoU0ZfNANIYKhxfMNote_Yw527weK_rLFMZ96olHPDwrKzoTpyjXgsf57UrysLDJKivVwnuWWt7P39mlSjB-IsGEl0DaL9qPhfIXMe1p-9wgiHhZ5TTR-9HqvsMzJhH67eERYVBFEJhoWdvAnQLuG4XXG1LdrXOirQEg=s4001" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2397" data-original-width="4001" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgk1TW2p6NgcdwP06k-pe4AYRZoU0ZfNANIYKhxfMNote_Yw527weK_rLFMZ96olHPDwrKzoTpyjXgsf57UrysLDJKivVwnuWWt7P39mlSjB-IsGEl0DaL9qPhfIXMe1p-9wgiHhZ5TTR-9HqvsMzJhH67eERYVBFEJhoWdvAnQLuG4XXG1LdrXOirQEg=w400-h240" width="400" /></a></div><br />In our version the opposing forces consisted of the following:<br /><br /><b>Red Force:</b> Marshal Ney<br /><br />Combined Voltigeurs<br /><br /><b>3rd Infantry Division</b><br />3rd Swiss Regiment (General Castella de Berlens)<br />The Neuchâtel Battalion (Marshal Berthier)<br />4th Bavarian Line Infantry Regiment (General Quisestil)<br /><br /><b>1st Heavy Cavalry Brigade</b><br />8th Cuirassiers (General Nansouty)<br />Empress's Dragoons (General d'Ornano)</div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>Provisional Artillery Brigade</b><br />1st Battery, Horse Artillery of the Guard<br />1st Battery, Foot Artillery of the Line</div><div><br /></div><div>1st Line Engineer Company (played by the Carabiniers of the 13e Legere)</div><div><br /><b>Blue Force: </b>His Dastardliness, The Baron von Driberg (graciously impersonated by <i>General Wallmoden</i>)<br /><br />2nd Silesian Schutzen Battalion<br /><br /><b>1st Brigade</b><br />10th (First Silesian) Infantry Regiment (General Zieten)<br />2nd Neumark Landwehr Infantry Regiment (General Pirch)<br /><br /><b>2nd Brigade</b><br />1st Brigade Russo-German Legion (General Arentschildt)</div><div>5th Wesphalian Landwehr Infantry Regiment (General Gneisenau)<br /><br /><b>3rd Brigade</b><br />25th (Lützower) Infantry Regiment (Colonel von Lützow)</div><div>18th (6th Reserve) Infantry Regiment (General von Bülow)</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Combined Cavalry Division</b></div><div>Leib Hussars (Colonel von Clausewitz)</div><div>6th (Lützower) Ulans (Generaladjutant von der Infanterie)</div><div>Garde du Corps (Generaladjutant von der Kavallerie)</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Freikorps Artillery Brigade</b></div><div>1st Battery, Russo-German Legion Foot Artillery</div><div>1st Battery, Lützower Foot Artillery</div><br /></div><div>The outcome, shall we say, was full of surprises. Once again, the plan is to paint the whole regiment in one go, with the sole exception of the wee test chasseur pictured below.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjYawgOBlN2K3tBQwFuISq-2Xvx5G5qaNaZjlBHD-AliQSMo9KA4YR79mkXPqCChiGlC0ZWK9zsNeG3Bz6TczUaKpJOeerAvV2wfuhk-J3h_X2CPREhozgWBD_bLbelrrFS1n-pnDQwtFrLegSaWZJQha6yDXZBjnWRNEH6CRkcwRf2dWF6CDJDFRWoNw=s1605" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1157" data-original-width="1605" height="289" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjYawgOBlN2K3tBQwFuISq-2Xvx5G5qaNaZjlBHD-AliQSMo9KA4YR79mkXPqCChiGlC0ZWK9zsNeG3Bz6TczUaKpJOeerAvV2wfuhk-J3h_X2CPREhozgWBD_bLbelrrFS1n-pnDQwtFrLegSaWZJQha6yDXZBjnWRNEH6CRkcwRf2dWF6CDJDFRWoNw=w400-h289" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjGwifustFuVTJ1Px3Iqgfpw9zdsJCb0-d6Mw3oCdyldqXfXLw0zaRv1hUjKlpCLGajuvFr8xf_8IelguQQzbxDKpDDFOqRnFqcA1X8AqDdOqkEQ5bYpiVNbsKGbIq251kOeM_1EZ6eLH2KOtGGnwy788bhcMOlMB2dApNcgYpL6XSIBvOGT8poai-Qeg=s1687" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1367" data-original-width="1687" height="324" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjGwifustFuVTJ1Px3Iqgfpw9zdsJCb0-d6Mw3oCdyldqXfXLw0zaRv1hUjKlpCLGajuvFr8xf_8IelguQQzbxDKpDDFOqRnFqcA1X8AqDdOqkEQ5bYpiVNbsKGbIq251kOeM_1EZ6eLH2KOtGGnwy788bhcMOlMB2dApNcgYpL6XSIBvOGT8poai-Qeg=w400-h324" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi8whrqJyKpph4nxD5AQzcJLK_M54YCPvn0CqMMS58Kpo46a_FcOjvorvyFWVXhMw1FgQ_lgPw85zc9o5GDHkivEfrPOkTnJ7dV1T96PyddkW3444qGZNTGuNXzMicw4rkpYxYlooh-wBcV1WW0NMzWaIYG0OTozF8RvaXhnkNpdTNXMagcXm4Tj7PR0w=s1233" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1032" data-original-width="1233" height="335" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi8whrqJyKpph4nxD5AQzcJLK_M54YCPvn0CqMMS58Kpo46a_FcOjvorvyFWVXhMw1FgQ_lgPw85zc9o5GDHkivEfrPOkTnJ7dV1T96PyddkW3444qGZNTGuNXzMicw4rkpYxYlooh-wBcV1WW0NMzWaIYG0OTozF8RvaXhnkNpdTNXMagcXm4Tj7PR0w=w400-h335" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhhHasRgPv26iWb5TqUMY1Reavm6d2G-OWC099LXEQ2dWqnnxIuBmkb6KVLGAOXM2Dm-qENAIQMz0J-ROym1WNgndg6vRA4cO_aSVRDypTsiiFymYmGe7crNRHqLnYGCPZcYjtErOPZdmDHWJH6I6F2umld_ZJ64XZw4uLcO02Vf8aagjGlvv69ZWGE6Q=s1613" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1445" data-original-width="1613" height="359" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhhHasRgPv26iWb5TqUMY1Reavm6d2G-OWC099LXEQ2dWqnnxIuBmkb6KVLGAOXM2Dm-qENAIQMz0J-ROym1WNgndg6vRA4cO_aSVRDypTsiiFymYmGe7crNRHqLnYGCPZcYjtErOPZdmDHWJH6I6F2umld_ZJ64XZw4uLcO02Vf8aagjGlvv69ZWGE6Q=w400-h359" width="400" /></a></div><p>He's a vintage Hinton Hunt <i>FN 122: French Chasseur a Cheval of the line charging</i>. I bought a hundred of them. I wasn't at all sure how well they would respond to paint, but as they were pretty solid affairs and a mere 2mm thick I thought it would be worth a try.</p><p>Seen below, using some very basic Thomas-the-Tank-Engine/Brio-style geometry, is what I did with a few of them:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEijptDQUwOhEb8JvQwll1wesFkw3UIDTtVrA2txcKQJoqaFOkbSJJkjHfA2YF7A1sx12bip_Y0NFzGeSM4mY2Pefra59iALXcScFJDLPqb3HH5futpRQigKzTlADJLddA805ZamDGMbgjThJqtJXKql6zvvsCih0jFne_sR_jEYeYJIPH1xhRjiwmjHJw=s4017" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2610" data-original-width="4017" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEijptDQUwOhEb8JvQwll1wesFkw3UIDTtVrA2txcKQJoqaFOkbSJJkjHfA2YF7A1sx12bip_Y0NFzGeSM4mY2Pefra59iALXcScFJDLPqb3HH5futpRQigKzTlADJLddA805ZamDGMbgjThJqtJXKql6zvvsCih0jFne_sR_jEYeYJIPH1xhRjiwmjHJw=w400-h260" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjhvMvrGXaw55569RtPTkrK_2LX_chyY5lW-tztMg9t_MashSr2lp469VfEbr6j5Cwd5nsDgeHcPOTzcLkRgwjAJ4sk05leYvzQ-02Ecq7QWBlSnhWhUHuQ4ZEm6Sf_zH1b2vb5SuhR36CoHZIZpbXHPWg5jFBq8rrJC1jHqGzqN1B_3JWHDRL-OsfY1Q=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjhvMvrGXaw55569RtPTkrK_2LX_chyY5lW-tztMg9t_MashSr2lp469VfEbr6j5Cwd5nsDgeHcPOTzcLkRgwjAJ4sk05leYvzQ-02Ecq7QWBlSnhWhUHuQ4ZEm6Sf_zH1b2vb5SuhR36CoHZIZpbXHPWg5jFBq8rrJC1jHqGzqN1B_3JWHDRL-OsfY1Q=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhbHVhabhMiWLlfj47jI4KpfFrqkmfRtNHT29ftjySunhNfcpm0Wafp4oTnFeO_U-xzdC9M7rCYdz0F-oCm25cG5UNMDG8qLsJhSmn4OjLiIgE5sWot4CsRXZFjUqxVjnAWrWaLaocfbev8xo-xoas3LYy587JuA3elJrHq0xP_QeEtihkF2jIDJfFXTA=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhbHVhabhMiWLlfj47jI4KpfFrqkmfRtNHT29ftjySunhNfcpm0Wafp4oTnFeO_U-xzdC9M7rCYdz0F-oCm25cG5UNMDG8qLsJhSmn4OjLiIgE5sWot4CsRXZFjUqxVjnAWrWaLaocfbev8xo-xoas3LYy587JuA3elJrHq0xP_QeEtihkF2jIDJfFXTA=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></div><p>The scenario we're to fight is the very first 'Table TopTeaser' by the late Charles Grant, which appeared in <i>Battle for Wargamers</i> magazine in February and March 1978. I actually <a href="https://thehintonspieler.blogspot.com/2019/09/troop-inspection.html" target="_blank">started these over two years ago</a>, so I thought it might be a good idea to finally finish them.</p><p>It's been a fairly slow process so far because I've been trying to block out the entire battalion in their basic uniform colours before getting into the details. In theory this will make painting them a bit more efficient, but whether or not this really turns out to be the case remains to be seen.</p><p>Completed this evening were the two elite companies.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8shug8QrucZlNWJDrQwy5GfTovIZkTY065NESJHT3lypaBEnHbK8W_MsVCo8-Vxl4CPxhGjqA4JQ15hS6t5tawuewHvxdDPw0OK4c4eSBNlFfq2tDiQ5i0u_xwUuDHN4CDCWZhqmFyQZF/s1468/IMG_0160+%25282%2529.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1100" data-original-width="1468" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8shug8QrucZlNWJDrQwy5GfTovIZkTY065NESJHT3lypaBEnHbK8W_MsVCo8-Vxl4CPxhGjqA4JQ15hS6t5tawuewHvxdDPw0OK4c4eSBNlFfq2tDiQ5i0u_xwUuDHN4CDCWZhqmFyQZF/w400-h300/IMG_0160+%25282%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The voltigeurs were the trickiest, but the wonderful wee trumpeter I found for them was just too delicious to resist, so he kept me motivated.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0GU99J_nN3_Vt0AdsGy6L1o-4DOKUR2QePUGp6nCw4dTEP2rZpIpC5gXvFcCkF_UJ-o9m2QZOwW8yWFv7NzGlFEAHvjbLvglpN8YtTw05LL-PbBTtEBYZG0KbytJsN7p8RZYO5oMmEDKl/s1481/IMG_0175+%25282%2529.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1111" data-original-width="1481" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0GU99J_nN3_Vt0AdsGy6L1o-4DOKUR2QePUGp6nCw4dTEP2rZpIpC5gXvFcCkF_UJ-o9m2QZOwW8yWFv7NzGlFEAHvjbLvglpN8YtTw05LL-PbBTtEBYZG0KbytJsN7p8RZYO5oMmEDKl/w400-h300/IMG_0175+%25282%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The grenadiers were a lot simpler, but while painting them I discovered there were actually four slightly different variations, as I hope the next two pictures will illustrate. It's a lot warmer in there and I can play my music on a proper sound system while I paint. I'm hoping this will do wonders for my productivity.</p><p>Stay safe my friends,</p><p>WM</p>Wellington Manhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08295966991101976478noreply@blogger.com20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4242408484763644333.post-63144552278104518362021-09-02T15:05:00.005+12:002021-09-02T18:42:13.177+12:00Life SaversIt is the Spring of 1813, and at a secret location Generallieutenant Baron von Winzingerode arrives with the Leib-Garde Grenadiers, who have been newly promoted to the Russian Imperial Guard.
