Heavy Going

Yes folks, it's an actual post, although not a very good one.

My failure to paint anything over the last few months has been one of a variety of set backs and frustrations, but I'm pleased to announce that I'm finally back in the groove. This is now urgent, as the collection has continued to grow in leaps and bounds, despite my slightly desperate attempts to offload some of it. There are, as a result, all sorts of wondrous and spectacular things waiting in the painting queue, so there was nothing for it but to knuckle down and crack on with the cuirassiers.

Below is a shot of the progress to date. As you can see, the horses are basically all done, and a decent start has been made on the troopers.

I've promised myself to post something every week until these accursed cavalry are complete. This may make for some rather uninteresting posts, but I'm at my wit's end and it's the only motivational device I can come up with at the moment.

What do you reckon - should I aim for a completed Nansouty or the trumpter for next weekend's installment?

Wish me luck, whichever it is.

  1. Matthew, posting every week is good for keeping focus if you can manage it - Nansouty by next week seems like a sensible target!

    1. I was afraid you'd say that. He's tricky-looking wee blighter. This particular vintage example came complete with a hole the size of a canon ball just above his midriff which I'm trying to fill up with layers of paint!

  2. Yay! Welcome back. They're looking good so not sure why they're not doing it for you but then you never were a cavalry-fancier - maybe because there are no flags?
I just cleaned, undercoated and converted (trumpeter with a Newline hand-swap) six Brunswick Hussars yesterday and by coincidence picked Nansouty out to accompany them - I like personality figures to keep up my mojo as they're what I like painting most. I shall send some 'in-progress' photos as I go to try and shame you into completing before me. The other six figures (Lt Dragoons) for the composite unit are in the bleach bath. if I complete them before your cuirassiers the trusty mess revolver will be your only way out...

    1. Challenging me to compete against Brunswickers is not fair, Rob!

I see that all the votes are for Nansouty so far, but it's early days...

    2. I forgot to vote - trumpeter for me. I like yellow uniforms, especially since you introduced me to H154.
Just done the first flesh tone on the riders and the bright colour undercoat (for the wipe-off method) on all the horses. The tortoise is on the march- slow and steady wins the day.

    3. I'd interpreted your earlier comment as a vote for Nansouty, Rob. A trumpeter it is then!

I share your penchant for yellow. There's a raging internal debate going on in these parts about how and when I ought to paint the Nauchatel battalion.

    4. Ooo! The Neuchatel Battalion...
I do like that unit... I have already painted them up using Jack Scruby Miniatures... but they really don’t fit in with Minifigs... so I will probably do another...

      All the best. Aly

    5. Have you? I never saw those on your blog. Can you post a link for us? I'd love to see them!

    6. Ah!... that’s because I never posted any pictures of them on the blog...

As it’s you... I will take a couple of shots tomorrow....😁

      All the best. Aly

    7. I think you've uncovered a secret Scruby-fanciers society, Aly.

    8. The photos are now up on the blog...

One day I may do a Shiny Scruby collection...😁

      All the best. Aly

    9. Can you still get Scruby figures? Both David and I have tried contacting Historifigs and heard nothing back... they offer some interesting Spanish options.

    10. Rob...
They are listed in the Wargames Miniatures Retired subjects section...
I had no problem contacting them in the past... but it was a while ago.

      All the best Aly

  3. Good to see you back in the saddle, so to speak. Painting cavalry is always a challenge. Triple the amount of work put into a unit to get 'em finished. Still, it looks like things are off to a rollicking start. I fell sorry, though, for that fellow with the pole placed where the sun never shines. Whatever you do, get him painted and cemented somewhere slightly more dignified.

    Best Regards,

    Stokes

    1. How very true. Fortunately I've a regiment of demountable troopers lined up for my next cavalry regiment. I'm hoping they'll be an altogether simpler proposition.

Yes, Nansouty's dignity has taken a bit of knock, hasn't it. I'll put you down as a vote for the general then, Stokes!

    2. My Nansouty is in exactly the same predicament.

  4. I am having the same problem with the 1st KGL. I have lost my painting mojo. I gave tried rebasing some of my 28mm ACW hoping that this tedious task would get me back painting.

Perhaps painting something simpler, such as Prussians perhaps, is the answer.

    1. I've tried all sorts of desperate things to make me paint, Mark, of which this blog is the most egregious example.

Getting your Prussians all prepped might do the trick. There's nothing like the seeing the next regiment hoving into view to make one finish the last one. Your KGLs are very eagerly awaited in these parts.

  5. Good see you back Matt...
How about Nansouty and the Trumpeter...😈

    All the best. Aly

  6. That yellow just pops! Another vote for the trumpeter, although Aly's solution does have some merit... Great to see you making progress again! We won't discuss how long some of the 28mm Hussars have been on sitting my painting desk. :(

    1. It is a source of wonder to me, David, how numerous people engaged in numerous project still manage to paint more Hinton Hunts than I do!

The Trumpeter has a commanding lead! This pleases me a lot as he looks a lot simpler than the rest of them.
