Russian WIP

Not much to report this week, except to say that we're five days into our second national lockdown, which looks all set to continue for a while yet. It's not all been working from home and doom scrolling, however: I've also been working on my Russians.

Progress to date is illustrated below. All the white bits are on at last, and although there's a lot of tidying up to do, I think I'm definitely on the home stretch with these now.

I'm very hopeful that they'll all be done by next weekend.

Yours,

WM

  1. Looking lovely Matthew…
They certainly tempt me about adding some Russians to my own collection .

    All the best. Aly

Be warned: Russian uniforms are a bit more-ish. You won't want to stop at just one battalion!

  2. Coming along nicely! What color(s) have you used for the coats? I ask because I've got some SYW Russians that need attention at some point.

    Best Regards,

    Stokes

    1. It's taking far too long, Stokes!
The coats are painted with the ever-dependable Humbrol 76 Uniform Green, highlighted with H99: Lemon Yellow, which looks far too brightt straight out of the tin, but really works well when dry-brushed on very gently.

    1. Thank you Mark.
I'm a big fan of Garrisons and just wish that they weren't so hard to get. They seem to be absurdly rare. I'm pathetically grateful to Rob Young for sending me these.

  4. Great job - they look nearly done apart from the muskets and metallics. I'm sure they will repay all this effort as your opponents will want to stay away from this lot as they look pretty handy.

    1. Cheers Rob,
My thoughts exactly, although it's me whose likely to suffer for it as the Dastardly JC always wants to be Blucher.

The Government will be making an announcement this afternoon about whether we can come out of lockdown on Wednesday. Nobody believes this is going to happen, so these may get finished sooner than expected. Not very many of us are vaccinated yet, so the outbreak is a serious crisis.

  6. These are, of course, coming along beautifully. You will have to let me know what you have learned about Russian uniforms so I can cheat off you when it comes time to paint my own. I did not realize the pompom buttons were done in company colors so clearly I have a lot to learn yet!

  7. It's all rather complex and mysterious, David!
For pom poms and shoulder straps, this one is very good: http://zaotlichiye.net63.net/allfacings.html

For flags, I use this: http://www.vexillographia.ru/russia/rarmy000.htm
The rather impressive Microsoft Edge translation function makes it all more or less comprehensible.

  8. That green is really nice (as is your brushwork) - it took me a while to decide on a Foundry green for my Russians although since then they brought out their aptly named "Russian Green". However I think it is a bit dark when applied to 20mm miniatures. You're right about Russians though, once you start you can't stop!

    1. I use H76 for everything - it's very versatile, although it takes ages to dry and 'set' properly. I discovered this when I mangaged to strip half of it off when I tried drybrushing Wallmoden!
