The Grand Review

At very long last I have finished the 8th Cuirassiers. It took two whole days to complete the final touches, which made me feel a little guilty yesterday as the weather was glorious. It was rubbish today though, so it was time well spent.

Marbot: General Nansouty has arrived with the cuirassiers, Sire.
Napoleon: He took his time! Very well, start the parade.

Nansouty: Cuirassiers! Let's show them what proper cavalry look like!

The 8th Cuirassiers defile past the assembled throng....

Nansouty: Nice one lads!

...and take up position on the right of the line.

Napoleon: Right then, time to thrash those Prussians!

The cuirassier figures are all vintage Hinton Hunt FN 102: Cuirassier Trooper, charging, with one converted into an officer and another as a trumpeter.

Lining them all up like that reminds me that I really need some more line regiments...

    Well... They look rather splendid Matthew.
    I shall always think of them as... The 8th (Dreaded) Cuirassiers.

      Thank you Stokes. It was all a question of finding the right head space with these, and then just enjoying the trip. Your blog has been a great inspiration in that regard.

    I agree you've definitely been cherry-picking when it comes to French cavalry - a complete absence of my beloved line chasseurs à cheval.

    That said cuirassiers are a must and a joy to behold; and command because for some reason I think they look their best from the back - must be those nice yellow capes. This makes a nice change because so often in this period one's own troops best side is facing the enemy and you're left staring at an array of backpacks - it can look more like a school cloakroom than a battlefield.

      The first two regiments were just what I could scrape together, Rob G. The order of battle should start to get a bit more realistic from here on in.

      Having said that, yes Rob Y, the 8th were chosen purely for their yellow cloaks, which I sincerely hope that the dastardly JC will never see.

    The cavalry review is a joy to behold, and I must say, Napoleon and his Generals are remarkable as well! Really stunning work. Now you just need to paint six more of each regiment...

      The supply of generals is starting to run a bit low, David, so I'm going to have to be a bit more creative if I'm going to keep this up.

    Is there archive evidence for Etienne-Marie Champion Comte de Nansouty's famous bon mot "Nice one, lads"? They are the new gold standard and well worth the wait; for the rest of us, anyway. Just love them. So, if I paint the 12th, can I give them pink capes?.....

      The 'Bergundian nobility' claim was just a front, Archduke. He was plain old 'Eddy Champion' from Chingford in reality

      Pink capes and a pink trumpeter are exactly what you get if you paint the 12th!
