Army Analysis

My apologies for the long intermission, but I've been away on holiday in the Deep South. Getting restarted on the painting table, however, has been a bit hit and miss. This will change, I'm hoping, as a result of a delightful visit from my friend Bill W, who came all the way from Oklahoma.

Bill wanted to see all the troops, of course, so I set them all out for him:

And this is what they'd have looked like if Bill had shown up in 1973:

And since you've twisted my arm, here's a slightly better colour shot:

This was very useful, as it happens, as it allowed me to see where I've got to and what the gaps are. Somehow or other I've managed to acquire 25 battalions of infantry, nine regiments of cavalry, eight batteries of artillery and about 32 command figures - or just shy of about 800 figures and models altogether.

The conclusions are: I'm going to need three more infantry battalions, three cavary regiments, four more batteries and a handful of colonels and generals to round off Phase Two; and that I really must paint the other half of the ping pong table.

Have a great weekend

  1. Ping-pong table notwithstanding, what a truly marvelous array of figures, units, and scenery so far! You have made Friday evening for me.

    Kind Regards and Happy Weekend,

    1. Thank you Stokes. It's very rare to see them all like this so I had to take a picture.

    1. It's not all that many really. It only takes about three foolscap box files to store them all.

  3. Spectacular display. Shows what you get when you keep plugging away so well done.

What are the lucky units you will be painting?

    1. I'm still umming and ahhing about it, but I reckon there's a definite shortage of heavy cavalry. To fix that I need one more for the French and two more for the Prussians. I think each side needs another skirmish battalion too.

  5. A colorful Grand Parade and a lovely sight to see everything on the table. I have done a a quick count of my collection and I have 19 battalions, 7.5 cavalry regiments, 10 artillery batteries and 13 commanders. I clearly need to pull my socks up and crack on with painting some of my lead mountain.

    1. It's interesting how there never seems to be quite enough of them, isn't it!

  6. Seriously you have more than enough for gaming now, from here on in it’s all about rounding off the collection. The French badly need another line infantry regiment but most of all I’d like to see Prussian dragoons (preferably with pink facings, a great colour combo) to assuage one of the few regrets I have over pursuing a Peninsular plan.
PS the females that have been distracting the Spanish commanders will get their final varnish this morning and photos will follow.

    1. I knew you'd say that about the French Rob! I was trending towards another guard battalion, but I'll give it some thought.

  7. An awe inspiring display, great work Matthew. I agree that you need to paint the other half of the ping-pong table!

    1. It's a bit of a problem as I'd need two tables of exactly the same height for them to sit on, which is easier said than done. An alternative idea is to aquire a set of identical small bookcases to put under them, which would help to solve another problem!

  8. My goodness I can't wait to get home and pop this up on my computer screen. Off travelling this weekend, but now I want to get on home and marvel at your creation. Tell Mrs. WM that the book cases and extra table top are clearly a brilliant solution that is much needed as well as endorsed by your readership!

    1. The problem with buying more shelves is that I immediately start accumulating more books, so it never really solves anything. They might provide a temporary reprieve though.

    1. There'll be another one at the end of Phase Two, Rob, which should only take a year or two!

  10. And every one a jewel. Should I be uneasy that the French appear to be about to hit the allies up the axis? I've never been strong on ball sports, but are not the two halves of a table tennis table supposed to be at the same height?

    1. He's a wily fellow, that Bonaparte, and no mistake. As for the ping pong table, when I salvaged it from the Wellington municipal tip there was no sign of the table legs so I've been perching it on various bits of furniture. The problem is that I haven't got anything big enough to take both halves!

    4. I made a lovely bookcase for my youngest. It turned out so well I am reluctant to let her take it when she moves out! Fortunately I have a couple of woodworker friends who let me borrow their tools, or made some cuts for me.

  11. Bonaparte, a wily fellow? I'll say - he seems to be able to be in THREE separate places at the same time!
