Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 2 (1. Westpreußisches Dragoner-Regiment)

The Soon Dragoons are ready to make their entrance, so without further ado, here they are:

And here they are again brigaded with the Garde du Corps. You can see why I thought they'd need a flag.

The figures are Hinton Hunt PN81: Dragoon, charging, x12. Nine of them are vintage castings (of which one, whose sword had broken off entirely, is now the trumpeter), and three (the officer, standard bearer and one of the troopers) are recasts.

I think I'm going to need at least one more Prussian heavy cavalry regiment to round off Phase 2. The question is: should they be line cuirassiers, or more dragoons? I think either would look rather dashing

I have a wee backlog of generals and whatnot to work through first, however, so I'll have plenty of time to think about it.

Regards

WM

  1. Gosh, you made us wait for this lot, but as they say, all good things…
Another Prussian cavalry unit? That would be hussars for my money, but if heavies, there’s that intriguing Osprey plate of cuirassier officers in very dark blue (https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/osprey-collection-prussian-armies-of-napoleon-plates--306244843418002107/) must go and look up why and whether it was the whole unit as they look spiffing. A candidate Humbrol Oxford Blue (104)?

  2. I think that's their field uniform. It does look rather natty, so I'll definitely think it over.

Picture No.3 shows why they took so long. It was far from clear how their straps were supposed to work on the actual castings, but this was my best guess.

  3. I often struggle with the belt arrangement on even the best HH castings. Apart from bringing these imperfect castings into glorious reality, these chaps show the way in confident application of paint to remedy less than confident casting lines. It ain't quick, but these chaps are just seminal

    1. The vintage castings were rather battered and flashy on the whole, but fortunately there was one exceptionally clean and crispy one who could serve as the Rosetta Stone to the rest of them. Even so, sometimes I has to just pick a spot and paint something on.

  4. Absolutely splendid Matthew…
As for another unit.. How about the 2nd East Prussian Cuirassiers.
Nice pale blue facings and they look good in full dress or with their dark blue Litewka’s…
You will be glad to know that inspired by your example my Hanoverian infantry have been moved from the far corners of the painting desk and are now nearing completion.

    All the best. Aly

    1. Yay! I somehow sensed that you wouldn't finish those until I'd completed these, Aly.

  5. Wow Mathew, the straps on the pelisse and fodder bag/canteen(?) along with all of the lining on the buckles and on the sword and ammunition belt are extraordinary. I understand now why they sat on your desk for a good while. Amazing work! These are really a first rate addition to the Prussian Cavalry, and you can tell by the grim expressions they mean business. Well done sir!

    1. Cheers David. Ah, yes, the mysterious white parcels on their left flanks. I think they might be moonlighting as postmen.

  7. A very fine war games unit. However indifferent the castings, you have made them look good!
